Caravan Cleaning Tips by the Caravan Pros

Look, we get it. Cleaning your caravan isn’t exactly the highlight of Van Life. But here’s the good news: it’s easier than you think when you know the right approach. Clean your caravan from top to bottom using caravan-specific products, not harsh household cleaners. Start with the roof, work down the sides, then tackle the interior with proper vacuuming and gentle cleaning solutions.
You’ve invested a lot into your van, and with over 901,000 caravans registered across Australia, keeping your van in top condition matters. A clean caravan protects your paintwork, maintains resale value, and helps you spot issues before they become expensive problems.
Whether you’re preparing for a caravan health check or getting ready for your next adventure, these caravan cleaning tips will keep your van looking its best.
Why regular cleaning matters
Our tropical Queensland climate creates unique cleaning challenges. Humidity means mould appears overnight, tree sap is sticky and stubborn and salt spray corrodes everything. Even dirt and Queensland’s sunshine can all damage your van’s exterior. The solution? Clean more frequently and don’t let salt or sap sit on your van for weeks.
Regular cleaning will prevent corrosion, keep your seals in good condition, and stop mould from becoming an issue. Plus, it looks great. One of our clients recently said, “I thought the black streaks were permanent until I used the right cleaner. It took 20 minutes and it looked brand new.”
Exterior caravan cleaning tips
Start at the top: Always clean your roof first using a sturdy stepladder (never walk on the roof). Work in sections so the cleaning solution doesn’t dry out in our Queensland sun. Use your hose on a gentle setting, not a pressure washer that can damage seals.
Choose the right products: Ditch household cleaners and car wash soap. Use pH-neutral caravan-specific products that won’t strip protective coatings or damage the finish.
Proper technique: Work from top to bottom in sections, rinsing each area before moving on. Use a soft brush or microfibre mitt, never anything abrasive. For black streaks, use a dedicated streak remover, and dry with a chamois or microfibre cloth to prevent water spots.
Protect your investment: Once or twice yearly, apply protective wax after cleaning. This creates a barrier against Queensland weather and makes your next clean easier. Not confident tackling this? The boys at The Caravan Guys can sort it during your regular caravan servicing.

Caravan interior cleaning tips
Clear it out first: Remove everything that’s not bolted down before you start. This gives clear access to every surface to give it a thorough clean.
Vacuum thoroughly: Use attachments to get into corners, along skirting boards, and between cushions. If you’ve got carpet, go over it twice.
Wipe down surfaces: Use gentle cleaners on interior surfaces. Mild detergent and water works for most jobs. Pay attention to kitchen and bathroom areas where grime builds up faster. Use microfibre cloths as they clean without scratching and don’t leave lint.
Check the details: Window tracks, cupboard hinges, and spaces behind the fridge all need attention. A soft toothbrush gets into tight spots. Check seals around doors and windows while you’re at it. If they’re looking dodgy, get them sorted before water becomes a problem. Use moisture absorbers inside and ensure proper ventilation to prevent mould.
Tackling specific problem areas
Some parts of your van need special attention because they’re either more delicate or prone to damage. Here’s a quick guide to the tricky bits:
| Area | Cleaning Method | Key Tip |
| Awnings | Dedicated awning cleaner and soft brush | Always dry completely before packing away to prevent mould |
| Windows | Plastic-safe cleaner and soft cloth | Caravan windows are more delicate than house windows |
| Water tanks | Tank cleaning product or lime cordial trick | Clean regularly, drive around to slosh it about, then drain |

When to clean your caravan
Give your van a full exterior wash at least twice yearly: once before storing it for extended periods, and once when bringing it back out. If you’ve been on muddy or salty trips, wash it sooner. The interior benefits from a quick tidy after every trip, with a deep clean every few months.
