What Is Covered By Caravan Insurance?
Insurance talk can feel like wading through mud after you’ve gotten your van bogged at a free (but soggy) campsite in the outback, so let’s make it simple. Most comprehensive caravan insurance covers accident damage, storm and hail damage, fire, theft, vandalism, plus your awning and contents. However, general wear and tear, pre-existing damage, and poor maintenance aren’t covered.

Sounds a bit scary? It doesn’t have to be. But with over 800,000 registered caravans across Australia and 54% of insurance claims related to road accidents or weather events, understanding what your policy covers matters. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a full-time Van Lifer, knowing what your caravan insurance covers will help you to make better decisions when the unexpected happens.
What comprehensive caravan insurance typically covers
What’s covered and what’s not can feel a little confusing, so let’s take a sec to break down each claim that is covered:
Accident and collision damage
If you’ve had a bingle in a small caravan park (yep, some of those corners are tight!), clipped a tree branch, or been in a serious collision, comprehensive insurance covers the repair costs. This includes panel damage, structural repairs, and paint matching that needs to be done.
Storm and hail damage
We all know that Queensland’s summer storms can be brutal. Your policy typically covers hail dents, wind damage to panels and roof, and storm-related structural damage. With our unpredictable weather all year-round, this coverage is essential.
Fire damage
Whether it’s from an electrical fault, a cooking accident, or an external fire, comprehensive policies will cover fire damage to your van and its contents.
Theft and vandalism
If someone’s nicked your van or had a go at it, insurance covers the loss or damage. With over 500 reported caravan theft cases per year across Australia, this coverage provides important peace of mind.
Water damage
Does caravan insurance cover water leaks? Yes, when water damage results from an insured event like a storm or collision. However, slow leaks from poor seal maintenance or gradual deterioration aren’t covered – this is considered preventable damage.
Contents and awnings
Most policies include basic contents coverage (often around $1,000), with options to increase this. Awning damage from high winds is usually covered, too.

What’s typically not covered
Now let’s look at what you may not be able to claim against:
Wear and tear
Your van is getting older and showing its age (unfortunately) isn’t an insured event. Faded paintwork, worn tyres, and general deterioration from use aren’t covered.
Pre-existing damage
Any dents that were already there when you bought the van or took out the policy won’t be covered in any future claims.
Poor maintenance
Damage resulting from neglect or inadequate maintenance is excluded. If you haven’t serviced your van regularly or ignored obvious issues, insurers won’t cover the resulting damage. This is why regular caravan repairs and maintenance really do matter.
Mechanical breakdown and gradual damage
Your fridge dying, slow water leaks from poor seals, or rust developing over time aren’t covered because insurance companies consider these issues as preventable with proper maintenance.
Understanding your policy
Firstly, your excess is the amount you pay when making a claim, typically sitting around $500-$1,000. Higher excesses do reduce your premium, but they’ll usually mean that you pay more when claiming. Then, it’s important to understand your agreed value vs market value. The agreed value means you and your insurer agree on your van’s value upfront. If it’s written off, you’ll receive this amount. Market value, on the other hand, means your payout will be based on what your van’s worth at the time of your claim.
Setting an agreed value will cost more in premiums, but will provide certainty if something happens.
Queensland-specific considerations
Living in Queensland is amazing; however, our tropical climate creates some pretty unique challenges. Storm damage in northern Queensland might have higher excesses, and flood cover isn’t always automatic and might need specific inclusion. With Queensland leading Australia with over 200,000 registered caravans, insurers understand the specific risks we face here, so it’s important that you know what is and is not covered by your policy.

Do you have to have caravan insurance?
Caravan insurance isn’t legally required in Australia unless you’re financing your van (lenders typically require comprehensive cover). However, going without insurance is risky. With repair costs often running into thousands and the average caravan worth $50,000+, most owners find comprehensive cover worthwhile for peace of mind on and off the road.
When to make a claim vs paying privately
Not every bit of damage is worth claiming for. If the repair costs less than your excess, paying privately will make more sense, as smaller claims can affect your no-claim bonus and future premiums may go up.
One of our clients recently said, “I had a small dent I could’ve claimed for, but after talking to The Caravan Guys, we fixed it privately for less than my excess. Saved my no-claim bonus for when I really need it.” If unsure, talk to our team, and we can give you advice that makes sense for your situation.
Making sure you’re properly covered
To make sure you are covered in the ways that will really matter, we recommend the following steps:
- Read your Product Disclosure Statement: Your PDS will outline exactly what’s covered and what’s not
- Declare modifications: If you’ve upgraded your van with solar panels or other modifications, tell your insurer so everything is coverable
- Keep your van well-maintained: Regular servicing and maintenance will protect your insurance coverage
- Update your sum insured: Review your value annually to ensure you’re not under or over-insured
- Store it securely: Where you keep your van affects both your premium and coverage, so store it securely every time

What happens when you need insurance repairs?
Right off the bat, you’ll contact your insurer and get a claim number, then arrange for a damage assessment – this is where choosing the right repairer matters. “Outstanding service and quality workmanship!
I had significant water damage in both the front and rear of my 2018 dual axle 21.6ft van. After reaching out to a few different repairers for quotes and advice, I decided to go with The Caravan Guys — and I’m really glad I did.
Emma and the team were honest, clear, and upfront from the start. They walked me through exactly what needed to be done, provided transparent pricing, and kept me well-informed throughout the repair process. Their communication was excellent, and they genuinely went above and beyond in terms of service..” – R Ramsay
Common insurance claim mistakes to avoid
We’ve seen some doozies in our time, but the main mistakes you’ll want to avoid when making an insurance claim are:
- Delaying your claim beyond your policy’s notification timeframe
- Not taking photos and documenting damage immediately
- Getting repairs done before insurer approval (unless emergency repairs)
- Not understanding your policy before you need it
