What’s Included in a Caravan Health Check – And When Do You Need One?

Technicians from The Caravan Guys giving a van a comprehensive health check

The van’s been parked in the driveway since the last school holidays, the trip’s booked, and there’s a little voice in the back of your head asking whether it’s actually ready for the road. That’s exactly what a caravan health check is for.

A caravan health check is a targeted safety inspection of the parts of your van most likely to cause trouble on the road: the roof and seals, chassis, suspension, tyres, and any signs of water entry. At The Caravan Guys, it’s completely free, and we’ll come to you. It’s worth booking one before a big trip, after your van’s been in storage, before buying a second-hand van and after any repair work.

What is a caravan health check, and how is it different from a service?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and it’s easy to see why people mix them up. Both keep your van safe, but they do different jobs.

A health check is a quick visual inspection. One of our team looks over your van’s key safety components, spots anything that’s worn, damaged or on its way out, and gives you an honest rundown of what we’ve found. Nothing gets pulled apart, and there’s no cost.

An annual caravan service is hands-on maintenance. That’s when we clean, adjust and replace parts to keep everything running smoothly, like repacking wheel bearings and adjusting brakes. Just like your car, your van needs one every year, whether or not anything seems wrong.

Put simply:

  • A health check tells you what condition your van is in
  • A service keeps it in good condition
  • A health check is free
  • A service is a paid job
  • A health check can be done wherever your van is
  • A service happens in our Arundel workshop

The two work best together. A health check between services means small problems get caught early, before they turn into big, expensive ones.

What’s included in a caravan health check

Our caravan safety check covers the parts of your van that matter most when you’re towing at 100km/h down the M1. Here’s what we visually check during the free check:

  • Roof and seals: we check the roof’s condition and inspect the silicone and seals around hatches, windows and joins, where leaks usually start
  • Water entry: we look for tell-tale signs like soft spots, staining, swelling or a musty smell
  • Chassis: we check for rust, cracks and damage, especially around welds and the drawbar
  • Suspension: we look over springs, shackles and bushes for wear, cracks or sagging
  • Tyres: we check tread, pressure and age, including cracking on tyres that look fine at a glance

If you’ve ever wondered what can go wrong in these areas, our guide to common caravan and RV problems covers the issues a health check is designed to catch.

When do you need a caravan health check?

We recommend a health check at least once a year, but there are a few times when it’s especially worth booking one.

Before a big trip

A pre-trip caravan check is the best peace of mind money can’t buy (because it’s free). Whether you’re heading up to the Sunshine Coast for the weekend or doing the big lap, it’s much better to find a worn bearing in your driveway than on the side of the Bruce Highway in full sunlight.

After long-term storage

Vans don’t love sitting still, especially through a Queensland summer. Heat and UV dry out seals, storms put them to the test, humidity can bring on mould, and tyres can crack or flat-spot from sitting in one position. If your van’s been parked for a few months, a check before you hitch up is a smart move.

Before buying a second-hand van

A shiny exterior can hide a lot of sins. Water damage, a rusty chassis or worn suspension can turn a bargain into a money pit. Getting a caravan check before you hand over any cash means you know exactly what you’re buying.

After repair work

Any time your van’s been worked on, it’s worth making sure everything else is up to scratch too. That’s why we give every van a once-over with a free health check before it leaves our workshop after repairs.

What happens if we find a problem?

Most of the time, a health check brings good news, or a few small things to keep an eye on. If we do find something that needs attention, we’ll explain what it is and how urgent it is, and give you a clear quote for any caravan repairs.

There’s no pressure, and you can decide what happens next. Plenty of our customers are just glad they found out before a trip rather than halfway through one.
